ABOUT Eleanor

This recent collection of paintings are all views from Isles of Scilly - both inhabited and uninhabited. I have focused on the lines and shapes that always seem to capture my attention. I have also purposely refrained from distorting the scale of the landscape so that the elements are quite accurate representations of the actual views. It's only the elements that I have chosen to highlight, and my choice of colour and technique, that create an abstraction.

What strikes to the core of my being is the presence of so many ages in one view. This resonates for me in Scilly because I know the landscape well, and I have grown up knowing parts of its history. The more I learn, the more I am blown away by the impact of the scenery. Every place in the universe has its own history, but this place speaks to me because I have honed my focus on it over three decades.

Bio.

British-American artist Eleanor Dorrien-Smith graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2008 with a BA in Fashion with Print. For over a decade Eleanor worked as a fashion and textile designer creating a studio line called PARTIMI, and her creative work has continually been inspired by the landscape and history of the Isles of Scilly.

Building on her love of drawing and colour, in 2021 Eleanor made a shift from her background in design, and she held her first informal exhibition of a collection of charcoal drawings. Since then Eleanor developed her work as an artist and in 2023 her painting ‘Coastal Lines’ was selected, exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Eleanor’s attention to line and colour are an indicator of both her background in print design and her love of the coastal landscape she is so familiar with. Eleanor is now based in Bristol working from her studio at home.
