Henry Bird
CERAMICIST
henry bird
Henry is a local potter based in Falmouth.
He studied art foundation and 3D Design at Loughborough University, exploring multiple materials and processes. Focusing on woodfired ceramics in his final year. He then went on train as an apprentice at Whichford pottery for 2 years, learning to throw flower pots, pack large kilns and all production related jobs.
Henry joined the leach pottery team in January 2021 as a production potter for 3 years. Now working from his local studio, focusing on woodfiring and developing his own work, it was woodfiring at university that first sparked Henry’s passion for pottery. His time at the leach pottery informs and guides his direction as a potter today, focusing on functional pieces, fired in a reduction atmosphere using Cornish stoneware clay and traditional wood ash and iron glazes. He owes his time at Whichford pottery to becoming confident and comfortable throwing big pieces and developing a strong understanding of the material and processes.
After studying henry was gifted a leach kick wheel, about 50 years olds, before subsequently going on to work at the leach, he now uses this wheel to make everything and enjoys the slowing down and imperfect pieces this wheel can contribute to.
