ABOUT Lucy

Lucy Giles (b.1975) is an Abstract Painter living and working in South London.

Traditionally trained at Glasgow School of Art, with over 25 years’ painting practice. Lucy has developed a strong visual signature, inspired by landscape and the everyday.

Working intuitively, and occasionally from memory; Lucy decodes sketchbook drawings made on location, capturing otherwise fleeting, missed moments; Building a composition, in oil paint, onto the canvas when returning to the studio. These complex paintings feel both intimate and honest. Humour and play are also strong themes within this very personal pictorial language. Bright and colourful, the paintings may appear “naïve”, however, they are in fact very sophisticated works; Whilst also evoking a quiet sense of strength and fragility.

To understand Lucy’s practice further, we must go back to a pivotal point in her training. And this was an exchange program to the Victoria College of Arts, Melbourne. Here Lucy was invited to travel to Aboriginal communities in Central and Western Australia. The vast landscape with “discarded” abstract objects, subsequently ignited and developed in her, a new and exciting way of seeing – passion and joy fundamental to her current painting practice.

Making both large and small scale oil paintings on paper, canvas and board; Lucy explores the rhythm of shape, line and colour with freedom and spontaneity. There is a real physicality within the movement of the oils; Great energy, and yet also precision… Lucy’s paintings can often take many months or even years, evolving over time.

As an internationally recognised and collected painter, (New York, Hollywood, Las Vegas, London, Sri-Lanka, Austria, Sweden, Ireland and Cornwall …), Lucy has been part of both Solo and Collective Exhibitions (including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition). And continues to work closely with her London gallery representative, exhibiting at the London Art Fair.

Lucy’s work is also regularly chosen by interior stylists featuring in editorial, notably Elle Decoration and Homes and Gardens.

Lucy is absolutely delighted to be exhibiting with Morgan’s and has had a strong connection to Falmouth, St.Mawes, and The Isles of Scilly, Cornwall, since childhood; A very special place which continues to inspire and influence her painting practice.
