ABOUT Sarah
The studio is the quietest space which allows a meditation of colour, space and form. Textures in the landscape are understood through the tactile quality of canvas and informed by the tranquillity of brushstrokes and movement of paint. Observing these landscapes, I visualise how my brush will flow. To me, the ocean has a softness that is translated in the movement of brush on canvas and the hues of each palette.
Paintings are influenced by balanced compositions, seasonally shifting between a gentle landscape and an elemental space. The relationship between colours and where they are placed brings such a feeling of these landscapes, so connected to the seasons and to the changing light through each day. Large scale paintings touch on the meditative process of working by hand and are framed in unfinished oak, bringing focus to the natural simplicity of materials.
My palettes are drawn from gentle and considered hues, working tonally with colours that resonate with quieter moments along the coast. The richness and warmth from mid-summer and the elemental light and cooler tones of cerulean and Prussian blue encapsulate a feeling of the changing landscape. ‘Making an object look like what you see is not as important as making the whole square you paint it on feel like what you feel about the object’ Georgia O’Keeffe.
