Sophie May is a painter based near Falmouth, Cornwall. She paints from her studio here at Morgans and her work features studio corners as well as other interior spaces around Cornwall and further afield.

Sophie’s paintings observe moments of stillness in domestic spaces. With formal training in Film her work has a distinctive cinematic feel, the compositions are deliberate and pull us closer with their shallow depth of field. 

Heavy brush strokes, confident marks and choice of colour palette are techniques borrowed from the artists of the Bloomsbury Group and Soviet Art from the 1960’s. These references have consistent colour pallets that evoke nostalgia, and compositions that share a fleeting lack of permanence. Working in charcoal and oil, Sophie has formed a recognisable style informed by 20th century painters and modernised through the evolution of her own practice.
